2022 NFL playoff picture: Which teams are in, who’s still in the hunt

The playoff picture is starting to come into focus.

Which teams have clinched, which teams are in the hunt, and who’s out? We’ve done the math for you!

Here are all the clinching and elimination scenarios if the playoffs started Sunday:

AFC Playoff Picture

TEAMS CURRENTLY IN:

No. 1 seed: Buffalo Bills (12-3, first in AFC East)

The Bills clinched the AFC East title with a 35-13 victory over the Bears on Sunday. They also own the tiebreaker over Kansas City for the No. 1 seed because of a head-to-head victory over KC on Oct. 16. 

Remaining schedule: at Bengals, vs. Patriots

No. 2: Kansas City Chiefs (12-3, first in AFC West)

The Chiefs clinched the AFC West title by beating the Texans on Dec. 18. They defeated the Seahawks 24-10 on Sunday, improving to 12-3 on the season.

Remaining schedule: vs. Broncos, at Raiders

No. 3: Cincinnati Bengals (11-4, first in AFC North)

The Bengals clinched a playoff berth in Week 16 after Thursday night’s loss by the Jets. They defeated the Patriots 22-18 on Sunday, improving to 11-4 on the season. They can clinch the AFC North title in Week 17 with a win and a Ravens loss.

Remaining schedule: vs. Bills, vs. Ravens

No. 4: Jacksonville Jaguars (7-8, first in AFC South)

Remaining schedule: at Texans, vs. Titans

No. 5 (first wild card): Baltimore Ravens (10-5, second in AFC North)

The Ravens clinched a playoff spot with their win over Atlanta on Saturday.

Remaining schedule: vs. Steelers, at Bengals

No. 6 (second wild card): Los Angeles Chargers (8-6, second in AFC West)

The Chargers can clinch a playoff spot in Week 16 with a win.

Remaining schedule: at Colts, vs. Rams, at Broncos

No. 7 (third wild card): Miami Dolphins (8-7, second in AFC East)

Remaining schedule: at Patriots, vs. Jets 

ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN:

No. 8: New England Patriots (7-8, third in AFC East)

Remaining schedule: vs. Dolphins, at Bills

No. 9: New York Jets (7-8, fourth in AFC East)

Remaining schedule: at Seahawks, at Dolphins

No. 10: Tennessee Titans (7-8, second in AFC South)

Remaining schedule: vs. Cowboys, at Jaguars 

No. 11: Pittsburgh Steelers (7-8, third in AFC North)

The Steelers can be eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 with wins by both the Chargers and the Dolphins.

Remaining schedule: at Ravens, vs. Browns

No. 12: Las Vegas Raiders (6-9, third in AFC West)

The Raiders can be eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 with wins by both the Chargers and the Dolphins.

Remaining schedule: vs. 49ers, vs. Chiefs

ELIMINATED: Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns

NFC Playoff Picture

WHO’S CURRENTLY IN:

No. 1 seed: Philadelphia Eagles (13-2, first in NFC East)

The Eagles clinched a playoff spot by beating the Giants on Dec. 11. They can clinch the NFC’s No. 1 seed (and a first-round bye plus home-field advantage) in Week 17 with a win or Vikings loss. They can clinch the NFC East title in Week 17 with a win or Cowboys 
loss.

Remaining schedule: vs. Saints, vs. Giants

No. 2 seed: Minnesota Vikings (12-3, first in NFC North)

The Vikings clinched the NFC North title by beating the Colts on Dec. 17. They defeated the Giants 27-24 on Sunday, improving to 12-3 on the season.

Remaining schedule: at Packers, at Bears

No. 3 seed: San Francisco 49ers (11-4, first in NFC West)

The 49ers clinched the NFC West title by beating the Seahawks on Dec. 15.

Remaining schedule: at Raiders, vs. Cardinals

No. 4: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-8, first in NFC South)

Remaining schedule: at Cardinals, vs. Panthers, at Falcons 

No. 5 (first wild card): Dallas Cowboys (11-4, second in NFC East)

The Cowboys clinched a playoff spot with losses by both the Seahawks and Commanders in Week 15.

Remaining schedule: at Titans, at Commanders

No. 6 (second wild card): New York Giants (8-6-1, third in NFC East)

Remaining schedule: vs. Colts, at Eagles 

No. 7 (third wild card): Washington Commanders (7-7-1, fourth in NFC East)

Remaining schedule: at 49ers, vs. Browns, vs. Cowboys

ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN:

No. 8: Seattle Seahawks (7-8, second in NFC West)

Remaining schedule: vs. Jets, vs. Rams

No. 9: Detroit Lions (7-8, second in NFC North)
