ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 12 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
For the first time in the four-belt era, boxing has an undisputed heavyweight champion.
Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury by split decision (114-113, 115-112 and 113-114) Saturday night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to add the WBC belt to his WBA, IBF and WBO titles. The last time an undisputed champion (three-belt era) reigned over the division was in 2000 (Lennox Lewis).
Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) had a chance to stop Fury in Round 9 when he found his chin with a well-placed left hook, part of a 14-punch flurry of unanswered blows that eventually sent Fury stumbling into the ropes for the knockdown. Fury recovered well and finished the fight on his feet, but it wasn’t enough to get the win. It was the ninth time Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) has been knocked down in his career.
Fury will have the chance to avenge the loss in an already agreed upon rematch on Oct. 12, also in Riyadh.
“I believe I won that fight,” Fury said after the bout. “I believe he won a few of the rounds. We both put on a good fight, the best we could do. We go back, have a little rest up, spend some time with our families and get it back on in October.”
With the victory, Usyk takes the No. 1 spot, while Fury falls to No. 2.
On the same card, Anthony Cacece scored a big upset over Joe Cordina to win the IBF junior lightweight title. Cacece (22-1, 8 KOs) dominated Cordina (17-1, 9 KOs) and sent him to the canvas in Round 3, before he finished him in the eighth round. Cacece enters the 130-pound rankings at No. 3, while Cordina falls three spots to No. 6.
Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
