Berrettini: ‘Our Aim Is To Win The Title’

Matteo Berrettini helped guide Italy to the ATP Cup final in 2021, but the World No. 7 is determined to go one step further this year as he leads his country in Group B in Sydney.

“We feel happy to be here,” Berrettini said in Italy’s pre-tournament press conference. “I think it’s possible [to win the title], the team is even stronger this year, so for sure our aim is to win the title. We know it’s going to be a tough job. Every match is going to be difficult, but we believe that we can do it.”

The 25-year-old went 3-1 at the event last season, with his only defeat coming against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final. Berrettini will once again face the World No. 2 at the 16-team event and is expecting a tough challenge.

“He is really solid,” Berrettini said on. “He’s moving really well, playing deep, serving well, returning. I mean, he’s not missing at all when he’s playing well. So especially on hard court he’s probably together with Novak, the best player we have now. He’s really tricky to play.”

The five-time tour-level titlist, who will also play Australia’s Alex de Minaur and Frenchman Ugo Humbert in Group B, is relishing the return to action and is excited about competing in Sydney.

“Alex is a really tricky player, especially here in Sydney, in his home country,” Berrettini said. “He’s been playing his best tennis here. I think this atmosphere brings him to play his best tennis, so it’s going to be very tough match.

“But I like it when the atmosphere is like that. I like [when] stadiums packed and people are cheering for you or against you. I’m really looking forward to that match.”

Jannik Sinner enjoyed a standout 2021 season, winning four tour-level titles and cracking the Top 10 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. The 20-year-old will make his ATP Cup debut this week as the No. 2 singles player for Italy and is looking forward to the opportunity.

“It’s a big honour to play in this special group,” Sinner said. “We have an incredible team. Every one of us tries to do our best. I’m looking forward to trying to be 1-0 up every time we play. And then let’s see. We have an incredible second player, and we have great, great doubles, as well.”

Italy captain Vincenzo Santopadre led his country to the championship match last year and his aims for this week are clear.

“It’s our goal to always do better than the previous experience. So of course, We don’t have to be shy to say that we are here trying to win.”
