Timmy Chang is returning to Hawai’i to be the team’s next head coach, the school announced Saturday.
Chang, a star quarterback for the Rainbow Warriors from 2000 to 2004, takes over at Hawai’i one month after he accepted a job as Colorado State’s wide receivers coach. He was an assistant coach at Nevada the previous five seasons.
Chang’s hiring comes a day after Hawai’i announced former head coach June Jones turned down the job, saying the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement about Jones’ staff and a succession plan.
In a statement Friday night, athletic director David Matlin said Hawai’i was “working tirelessly” to hire a coach and understood the urgency with national signing day coming Feb. 2.
In addition to Chang and Jones, Hawai’i had considered former offensive coordinator Brian Smith, who most recently served as offensive coordinator at Washington State, according to sources. Other candidates included UCLA defensive assistant Brian Norwood, a former Hawai’i defensive back.
