Belinda Bencic made the semifinals of the Volvo Car Open in her debut appearance in 2014, as a 17-year-old qualifier ranked World No.140. This will be her first meeting with 18-year-old qualifier Destanee Aiava.

Sofia Kenin has a 1-0 head-to-head lead on Sabine Lisicki, as the American claimed their only prior encounter at Indian Wells last year in straight sets.

Lisicki won the Volvo Car Open singles title in her first appearance in Charleston in 2009. She holds a 13-5 win-loss record at the event overall.

2017 Volvo Car Open finalist Jelena Ostapenko has won both of her previous meetings with Johanna Larsson in straight sets. This will be their first meeting off of hardcourt.

Evgeniya Rodina won her only previous match with Shelby Rogers, which came way back in 2010 on the clay courts of a Challenger event in Dothan, Alabama, USA. Rogers was 17 years old and ranked World No.756 at the time. 

Rogers is currently unranked, having not played a professional match in just over a year. The 2016 French Open quarterfinalist returns to action for the first time since a first-round loss to Caroline Dolehide at Indian Wells last year.

2016 Olympic champion Monica Puig holds a 3-0 head-to-head lead on Sara Errani. Each of Puig’s wins came on a different surface (grass, clay, and hardcourt) and they all came when Errani held a Top 20 ranking between 2013 and 2016.
