Darlington Nagbe nets Crew a draw with Red Bulls

Darlington Nagbe scored in second-half stoppage time to lift the Columbus Crew to a 1-1 draw against host New York Red Bulls on Sunday in Harrison, N.J.

The Red Bulls (2-1-1, 7 points) were poised for victory when they scored an own goal by Crew goalkeeper Eloy Room in the 84th minute off a corner a kick. Sean Nealis sent a headed ball toward goal that Tom Barlow headed off Room and into the net.

Columbus (2-0-2, 8 points) pressured for the equalizer. Nagbe, who was deep in the box when a loose ball fell to his feet, cracked a shot past goalie Carlos Coronel in the 95th minute.

The Crew, who had a club record nine goals through three games, were frustrated by the always stingy New York defense before Nagbe’s heroics.

The Red Bulls have allowed fewer than two goals in 17 consecutive matches, the fourth-longest streak in MLS history (including playoffs). It ties the longest streak in the past decade, matching the 17-game run by the Crew from August 2019 to September 2020.

Coronel denied Derrick Etienne Jr. on a breakaway in the 78th minute. After the save, the ball spun behind Coronel but Etienne was at a tight angle and couldn’t put the ball into the open net.

Etienne was in the starting lineup less than 72 hours after being beaten and robbed by approximately nine men near downtown Columbus on Thursday night, according to a Columbus police report.

Etienne practiced Friday and Saturday.

The Crew’s Lucas Zelarayan had his six-game goal streak end, leaving him tied with Stern John (1998-99) for the club record. Zelarayan had four goals in three games to end last season and four in three games this campaign.

After an international break next weekend, the teams resume MLS play on April 2 when the Crew host Nashville SC while the Red Bulls visit the New England Revolution in Foxborough, Mass.
