ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. A fighter who has announced he is moving up or down to a new weight division will not be ranked in a new weight class until he actually fights in that weight class (and warrants being ranked). Fighters that currently own titles in two different divisions will be ranked in both weight classes.
Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 15 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed from the rankings. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after the following bout.
Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney scored victories over Isaac Cruz and Joseph Diaz Jr., respectively, but the wins weren’t impressive enough to help them move up in the lightweight division. However, even in defeat, Cruz cracked the top 10 at 135 pounds for the first time in his career.
Oscar Valdez tested positive for the banned substance phentermine, yet was still allowed to defend his title on Friday, Sept. 10 against Robson Conceicao. Valdez scored a unanimous decision victory and retained his WBC junior lightweight title, but he will not maintain his status as ESPN’s No. 1 boxer at 130 pounds. That distinction now belongs to Shakur Stevenson, who previously was No. 2. Conceicao, who performed well in defeat, enters the rankings at No. 10. O’Shaquie Foster is now ranked No. 9, replacing Gervonta Davis, who vacated his 130-pound title to move up in weight. After Valdez’s next fight, he’ll have an opportunity to return to the rankings.
Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Ben Baby and Michael Rothstein. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
