Divisional rankings: Hyun-Mi Choi wins, where does she land at 130 pounds?

Days after the junior lightweight division began its unification process, the lone champion not named Alycia Baumgardner at 130 pounds defended her own belt.

WBA champion Hyun-Mi Choi beat Vanessa Bradford by unanimous decision in South Korea on Wednesday, extending Choi’s reign of the WBA belt to her 10th straight defense. It was the first time in the ring this year for Choi (20-0-1, 5 KO), who had been called out by both Baumgardner and former champion Mikaela Mayer for the past year to unify titles.

Instead, Choi fought Bradford (6-4-2), who had lost three of her last five fights entering her bout against Choi, inlcuding defeats to Baumgardner and Mayer.

The last time Choi fought a fighter with one or fewer losses on her record was Shannon O’Connell in 2013. Baumgardner, after her win in October, specifically called out Choi, who remains ranked No. 5 in the division by ESPN, for an undisputed fight at junior lightweight.

On Thursday in Indio, California, Anabel Ortiz (33-5, 4 KO) beat Maria Micheo Santizo (10-2, 6 KO) by unanimous decision at junior flyweight. And on Friday in Australia, Mea Motu (14-0, 6 KO) won a convincing decision over Usanakorn Thawilsuhannawang (16-3, 15 KO) at junior lightweight. Also on Friday, Mailys Gangloff (7-3, 2 KO) won the first 10-round fight of her career, beating previously undefeated Delphine Mancini (5-1) by unanimous decision in a bantamweight bout in France.

In Croatia on Saturday, Ivana Habazin (21-5, 7 KO) beat Diana Prazak (14-5, 9 KO) in a battle of veteran fighters at welterweight. The 33-year-old’s only defeats have come in world title fights, and it could be reasonable to see Habazin, the one-time IBF welterweight champion, again challenge for a belt in a division without a bunch of depth.

This weekend has more titles on the line, starting Friday night in Buenos Aires, when WBA junior bantamweight titleholder Clara Lescurat (7-0, 3 KO) makes the first defense of the title she won in June when she faces Naylea Gil Sanabia (11-4-1, 5 KO). The 24-year-old Sanabia has lost four of her last five fights.

Then on Saturday, ESPN’s No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter, lightweight Katie Taylor, puts her undisputed titles on the line against Karen Elizabeth Carabajal at Wembley Arena in London. It’s the first fight for Taylor (21-0, 6 KO) since her split decision, epic win over Amanda Serrano in April at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Carabajal (19-0, 2 KO) will be getting her first shot at a world title.

Also on that card, junior featherweight prospect Ellie Scotney (5-0) will be facing Mary Romero (8-2, 2 KO) in a good test for Scotney since Romero hasn’t lost since 2016.

On the Jake Paul undercard in Arizona, ESPN’s No. 5 super middleweight, Shadasia Green (10-0, 9 KO), will take on former WBA featherweight champion Ogleidis Suarez (30-4-1, 14 KO) in an eight-round fight.

A very good women’s card is taking place in the Bahamas, headlined by Jessica Camara, ESPN’s No. 4 junior welterweight, moving up to welterweight to take on Dahianna Santana. Camara (10-3, 2 KO), is fighting for the third time this year while Santana (40-13, 16 KO) has struggled throughout her career against quality competition.

On the undercard, Mary McGee (27-4, 15 KO) enters the ring for the first time in 2022 — and the first time since losing her IBF junior welterweight belt to Chantelle Cameron last year. This time, ESPN’s No. 3 junior welterweight is fighting at welterweight against Prisca Vicot (14-8, 2 KO), who has won her last three fights.

Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
