Divisional rankings: Leigh Wood moves up after incredible KO of Michael Conlan

ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. A fighter who has announced he is moving up or down to a new weight division will not be ranked in a new weight class until he actually fights in that weight class (and warrants being ranked). Fighters that currently own titles in two different divisions will be ranked in both weight classes.

Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 15 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed from the rankings. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after the following bout.

Leigh Wood made a great comeback to defeat Michael Conlan by 12th-round KO to retain his WBA “regular” featherweight title. With the victory, he also moved up in the division, landing at No. 4 overall.

“Leigh Wood was an afterthought heading into his July fight with Xu Can, but following that dominant win and now a thrilling come-from-behind knockout of Michael Conlan that sent his foe crashing through the ropes, Wood is established as one of the best fighters in a division that features no clear-cut No. 1,” ESPN boxing writer Mike Coppinger said.

“There’s a high probability Wood faces off with the winner of the Kiko Martinez-Josh Warrington title fight, a matchup that would present him another chance to move up in the rankings. For now, he’s worthy of a No. 3 ranking on my list.”

Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Ben Baby and Michael Rothstein. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
