Divisional rankings: Smith shakes up middleweights with upset of Eubank Jr.

ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will often change, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. A fighter who has announced they are moving up or down to a new weight division will be ranked in a new weight class once they fight in that weight class (and warrants being ranked). Fighters that currently own titles in two different divisions will be ranked in both weight classes.

Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 15 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed from the rankings. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after the next bout.

On Saturday, Liam Smith scored an upset TKO victory over Chris Eubank Jr. in Manchester, England. Smith dropped Eubank twice in Round 4 before referee Victor Loughlin put a stop to the action at 1:09 minutes of the round.

The win was impressive enough for our panel to move Smith into the rankings at No. 6, dropping Eubank to the No. 9 spot.

On the same card, former heavyweight champion Joseph Parker Jr. earned a unanimous decision victory over Jack Massey, solidifying his No. 8 spot in the division.

Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Ben Baby and Michael Rothstein. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
