Ex-Liverpool defender Jose Enrique given all clear from brain tumour

ESPN FC’s Craig Burley and Mark Donaldson square off in predicting who will advance to the Champions League semifinals.
Following Mohamed Salah’s goal-of-the-season contender, ESPN FC’s Steve Nicol explains why the Liverpool forward cannot be underestimated.
Leicester City’s four-match winning run is over thanks to an Ayoze Perez header, which moves Newcastle three points closer to Premier League safety.

Former Newcastle and Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has said he has been given the all-clear following his battle with cancer.

Enrique was diagnosed with a brain tumour in May 2018 and underwent several radiotherapy sessions after it had been successfully removed following an operation.

But, via an Instagram video message, he said he is now ready to “look forward” after being told he is cancer free.

“Hello guys, I just have some wonderful news today,” he said. “I just got back the report from the MRI I had just a week and a half ago.

“I just wanted to let you know, because the support from all of you has been amazing, that it’s all clear, all perfect. Obviously when I received the news, me and [my partner] Amy were together and even the dog, I think, understood it as well — and we’re so happy about it.

“I can look forward now, not back anymore and just keep fighting. So it’s all clear and perfect. Thank you, guys.”

Enrique, who joined Liverpool in 2011 and left for Real Zaragoza in 2016, also played for Celta Vigo, Villarreal and Newcastle United before retiring in September at 31 because of persistent troubles with his knee.

He joined the agency founded by his brother after his career ended, and he told Marca he was meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton to discuss a player when he felt a significant headache.

He went to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a chordoma, a soft-tissue tumour located behind one of his eyes.
