Five things to know about the Pelicans on Jan. 8, 2020

1)      New Orleans (12-25) wraps up a quick two-game homestand tonight, facing Chicago (13-24) at 7 p.m. in the Smoothie King Center. Tickets are available here. Watch Tuesday post-practice video interviews with Alvin Gentry, Lonzo Ball and E’Twaun Moore.

2)      Watch a hype video for Wednesday’s interconference matchup.

3)      Jrue Holiday will sit out Bulls-Pelicans, his second straight DNP due to a left elbow contusion.

4)      On Western Conference Wednesday, the Pelicans are four games behind eighth-place San Antonio (15-20). The Spurs have a tough test this evening, visiting Boston. Meanwhile, five teams between No. 9 and No. 13 in the West are separated by only 1.5 games, with Memphis (16-22) currently ninth and Phoenix (14-23) in 13th place. Incidentally, among squads 8 through 13, New Orleans is 0-0 vs. San Antonio, 0-0 vs. Memphis, 2-0 vs. Portland, 1-0 vs. Sacramento, 1-0 vs. Minnesota and 1-1 vs. Phoenix.

5)      New Orleans was 19th on NBA.com’s power rankings this week, after a 1-1 split in Week 11. As writer John Schuhmann noted, “real improvement has come on defense, where they’ve allowed just 103.8 points per 100 possessions (the league’s fourth best mark) over (a 6-2) stretch.” Elsewhere, The Athletic moved the Pelicans all the way up to No. 14 from 21; SI.com placed the Pelicans at No. 23; ESPN and CBS both joined NBA.com with a 19 ranking.
