Police are investigating after Oldham striker Hallam Hope was allegedly attacked in the club’s car park by a Chesterfield player after their National League match on Saturday.

The forward suffered serious injuries that will require surgery following the incident. It is claimed that Hope was met in the car park by the alleged assailant and was attacked, leaving him needing hospital treatment due to the serious nature of his injuries. It is understood other Chesterfield players will be providing statements to the police.

The club have supplied police with CCTV relating to the incident, which Oldham described as a “vicious assault” that will leave Hope unable to play for a number of weeks.

“The club is supporting Hallam and will continue to do so. We wish him a speedy recovery from a dreadful experience,” Oldham said.

The Barbados international came through Everton’s academy system and had permanent spells with Bury, Carlisle and Swindon before joining the Latics last summer. The Manchester-born player represented England up to under-19 level.

“Following an incident which took place after Saturday’s game at Oldham Athletic, we are aware of an allegation relating to an un-named Chesterfield player,” a Chesterfield statement said.

“We are assisting Greater Manchester Police with their enquiries. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made at this stage.”

Police confirmed they received a call on Sunday regarding the incident and started an investigation.
