Former World No. 1 Andy Murray will be aiming to create more history on Friday when he opens his BNP Paribas Open campaign against Taro Daniel in Indian Wells.
Victory on Stadium 1 against the Japanese qualifier would earn Murray his 700th tour-level win, becoming just the fourth active player alongside the Big Three of Roger Federer (1251), Rafael Nadal (1043) and Novak Djokovic (991) to hit this milestone.
The 34-year-old, who won his first tour-level match against Ventura Santiago at The Queen’s Club in 2005, is facing Daniel for the third time this season. The World No. 106 defeated Murray at the Australian Open, before the wild card gained revenge in Doha. Murray leads their ATP Head2Head series 2-1 overall.
The 46-time tour-level titlist reunited with former coach and World No. 1 Ivan Lendl this week ahead of his 14th appearance at the ATP Masters 1000 event. Murray, who lifted three Grand Slam trophies under Lendl’s guidance, advanced to the final in Indian Wells in 2009.
“Getting back to playing better tennis is the aim,” Murray told ATP Media this week. “I have had good results over the past couple of years but the consistency of them has been poor and I think that is because the level of tennis I have been playing has not been that high. I trust a lot of what Ivan says. We have had excellent results together in the past.”

#NextGenATP American Brandon Nakashima is making his second appearance in Indian Wells and will open against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino on Stadium 1. The 20-year-old, who reached the second round in the California desert last year, trails Mannarino 0-1 in their ATP Head2Head series, with the World No. 66 defeating Nakashima in Delray Beach last month.
Fellow #NextGenATP star Holger Rune also features in an action packed second day after coming through qualifying. The Dane enjoyed an impressive 2021 season, capturing four ATP Challenger Tour titles as he qualified for the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals.
The 18-year-old takes on Ugo Humbert in their first ATP Head2Head meeting on Stadium 5. Humbert will be aiming to snap a five-match losing streak, with his only victory of the year coming against World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev at ATP Cup. Sixth-seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini awaits the winner.

Shang Juncheng will be the first Chinese man to play in the main draw at Indian Wells after qualifying on Thursday. The 17-year-old, currently No. 543 in the ATP Rankings, will play fellow qualifier Jaume Munar on Stadium 7.
Shang is the youngest Masters 1000 qualifier since a 16-year-old Rafael Nadal achieved the feat in Hamburg in 2003 and is the first player from his country to qualify for a Masters 1000 event.
“It’s always special to see what I’ve accomplished,” Shang told ATPTour.com. “But for me, it’s more important to move forward. I’m just really happy to even play in this tournament and qualifying was one of the biggest goals for me this year. I’m excited. Hopefully, I can give him a fight.”
The men’s doubles draw also commences on Friday, with many big stars in action. Australian Open champions Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios play Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo and could face top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic in the second round.
The Croatians meet American wild cards John Isner and Jack Sock, with both matches taking place on Stadium 2.
Seventh seeds Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski have won three tour-level crowns in 2022 and begin against Italians Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini, while Feliciano Lopez and Stefanos Tsitsipas face Raven Klaasen and Ben McLachlan on Stadium 4.
Andrey Golubev partners Alexander Zverev, with the Kazakh-German tandem taking on Top 30 singles pair Daniel Evans and Karen Khachanov.
