Lions suffer setback as Dillon Smit’s rotten luck continues

Dillon Smit clutches his shoulder

Dillon Smit’s wretched injury record has been given another unfortunate inscription.

The 27-year-old Lions scrumhalf looks set for yet another substantial period on the sidelines after injuring dislocating his shoulder in his team’s narrow 19-16 Super Rugby Unlocked loss to the Sharks this past weekend.

He went for a scan last Saturday and will now need to see a specialist.

Smit looked visibly in discomfort after he had to chase and defend a kick forward to avert the attention of Sharks centre Marius Louw, who was gunning for the tryline and landed awkwardly on his opponent’s shoulder.

A former star for NWU-Pukke in the Varsity Cup, Smit has been dogged by injuries for the majority of his senior professional career, ranging from ankle to hamstring problems.

This latest setback will be particularly annoying to him as he emerged from relative obscurity – at least in terms of the Lions’ four-man strong group of halfbacks – to leap into the side’s starting line-up on the back of two fine pre-season performances.

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA - OCTOBER 09: Morne van den B

His replacement, Morne ‘Krappies’ van den Berg, was energetic but it’s likely that Ivan van Rooyen, the Lions’ head coach, will rather go for the steadiness of Andre Warner or Ross Cronje to start Saturday’s meeting with the Stormers at Newlands.

Meanwhile, forgotten Springbok tourist and flanker Roelof Smit, who joined from the Bulls at the end of last year, will commence full training again this week.

The Lions will name their match squad for the game on Thursday.
