Daniil Medvedev cruised past Emilio Gomez 6-0, 6-2 in 58 minutes to earn the Russian Tennis Federation victory against Ecuador on Saturday at the Davis Cup Finals.
The World No. 2 overpowered Gomez from the baseline and raised his level in the key moments as he saved all four break points to triumph in Group A in Madrid.
Andrey Rublev had given the former champion a 1-0 lead when the 24-year-old defeated Roberto Quiroz 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. The World No. 5 fired 13 aces and struck 21 winners to secure victory after one hour and 32 minutes.
“I am really happy to bring a point to the team,” Rublev said. “It is not easy to adapt with the high altitude. It is my second time playing at the Davis Cup in Madrid and I am happy to help my team. It is going to be a long week with tough matches.”
The Russian Tennis Federation sealed a 3-0 win in the doubles rubber when Aslan Karatsev and Andrey Rublev overcame Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Ecuador can no longer qualify for the quarter-finals, after also losing to Spain in its opening tie.
In the first tie of the day, Following Alexander Bublik’s victory, Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov completed the comeback for Kazakhstan, defeating Andre Goransson and Robert Lindstedt 6-3, 6-3 to seal a 2-1 win against Sweden.
The pair won 87 per cent (26/30) of first-serve points and did not face a break point to triumph after 69 minutes.
Earlier, Elias Ymer overcame Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 7-6(4) to put Sweden on the brink of qualification after the former champion won their opening Group B tie against Canada Thursday.
Ymer hit nine aces and blasted 26 winners in his one-hour, 53-minute win. However, his brother, Mikael Ymer, was unable to win the tie, falling to Alexander Bublik 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in one hour and 37 minutes.
Bublik broke four times and won the last eight games to bring Kazakhstan level.
