Kevin Mawae is out as coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, the school announced on Friday.
The firing comes on the heels of last week’s announcement that the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) had handed the school a two-year playoff ban due to recruiting violations.
“This afternoon, Lipscomb Academy and head football coach Kevin Mawae mutually agreed to part ways,” Lipscomb Academy headmaster Brad Schultz told The Tennessean. “We appreciate Kevin’s service as head of the coaching staff and for leading the Mustang football team as it transitioned into a higher level of competition this season.”
Among the issues stemmed from quarterback Deuce Knight, a Notre Dame commit, and his cousin Kohl Bradley playing in three games for the school despite not making a “bona fide move to Nashville” from Mississippi, according to a previous report by The Tennessean.
Mawae, who was hired back in January, led the Nashville private school to a sub-par 4–6 season in its first season in Division II-AAA. The Pro Football Hall of Fame center was unable to continue the success of former Super Bowl champion quarterback Trent Dilfer, who led the program to back-to-back DII-AA state championships. Dilfer left the school after being named the head coach of UAB.
“We are proud of our team for its resolve to finish the season strong and know the future is bright for the Mustang football program. We wish Kevin well in his future professional endeavors,” added Schultz.
