PXG's New Black Ops Driver is Another Step Forward for the Clubmaker

Last month I received an email from PXG that contained an invite to Scottsdale National, the private golf course for the company’s billionaire founder Bob Parsons, to attend a media day to check out the all-new 0311 Black Ops Driver.

It turned out to be an incredible experience. Not only did I get professionally fitted for the driver, but I also had the opportunity to sit down with Parsons and learn more about his background, his vision for the company and this new driver.

Parsons said that PXG had a major breakthrough when designing the Black Ops. I think he may be right: for the first time in my life I drove a ball 300 yards.

PXG Black Ops Driver Review: Look and Sound

There are some noticeable changes with the PXG 0311 Black Ops driver compared to last year’s Gen6. First, the new driver has a sleek gloss finish, which, in my opinion, looks great. A carbon fiber plate has also been added to the sole, enhancing its overall design.

When you address the ball, you’ll notice it has a slightly larger footprint than the Gen6. This larger frame allows more weight to be moved back into the clubhead, creating more forgiveness.

Although it seemed lighter in my hands, my fitter assured me that the 0311 Black Ops has a standard head weight, similar to the Gen6. The sound at impact is also different. The Black Ops Driver has a satisfying mild pop sound, which I really like.

Design and Technology

PXG says the 0311 Black Ops driver is more forgiving, longer and more consistent than the Gen6. This is mainly due to two fundamental design changes:

1. The new face material called “AMF Technology” is a stronger proprietary titanium alloy that creates lower spin and higher launch than the T-412 material used in Gen6.

2. An increased amount of carbon fiber in the sole, which enhances acoustics and improves performance.

The Black Ops driver also retains the Precision Weighting Technology from the Gen6. With three ports for individual weights, golfers can customize their driver to optimize shot shape.

Conclusion

The PXG 0311 Black Ops Driver blew me away. After seeing the impressive numbers during my fitting, it became clear that this driver doesn’t just meet expectations — it sets them.
