If you thought last spring’s transfer portal was overwhelming, this spring likely hasn’t improved matters. The roster changes have continued at a furious pace.

The one-time transfer waiver remains in effect, and a number of additional factors have led to a similar number of men’s basketball names in the portal this spring to the 1,832 that went in for the 2020-21 academic year. Programs must get back to the 13-scholarship limit after being allowed to exceed it for 2021-22 thanks to the extra year of NCAA eligibility, meaning rosters will need to be reduced for many programs. Also, because of COVID-19 protocols, the majority of last year’s freshmen were on campuses they never even visited before arriving in the summer or fall — another factor that led to attrition.

After a slow start, the current pace is closing in on last offseason’s record-setting numbers. One of the early concerns was the lack of optimism about two-time transfers getting waivers to play immediately next season. But some early requests have already been granted. The deadline to enter the portal and still be eligible for next season was May 1, so we likely won’t see players entering the portal in July like they did during the previous cycle. Still, more than 50 players have hit the portal since the deadline passed.

So, with the May 1 transfer deadline and the June 1 NBA early-entry withdrawal deadline both now behind us, player movement should slow considerably. The latter deadline brought some clarity on some available players in the portal, and with the likes of Malachi Smith (who committed to Gonzaga last week), Pete Nance and others withdrawing from the draft, more commitments could be coming soon.
