Report: Bears Make Decision on Coach Matt Eberflus’s Future Amid Staff Shakeup

The Chicago Bears are not expected to fire coach Matt Eberflus this offseason amid a shakeup of his coaching staff, according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. The franchise fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko and wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert on Wednesday.

This was both Eberflus’s and Getsy’s second season with the team and the Bears are just 10–24 in the timespan. Chicago finished the 2023 season with a 7–10 mark and was 17th (20.4) in the NFL in points per game. This may not be the only major move they make on offense this offseason as well.

Chicago has the No. 1 pick in April’s NFL draft and the gem of this year’s class is considered to be USC quarterback Caleb Williams. There’s been much speculation on what the team will do: trade the top pick away to build around quarterback Justin Fields or trade Fields to build around Williams.

Fields had an up and down third-year campaign but finished with 2,562 passing yards and 657 yards on the ground. He threw 16 touchdown passes and rushed for four while completing 61.4% of his passes to go with his nine interceptions.

No matter who they go with, the Bears will leave their young quarterback in the hands of Eberflus in 2024.
