Amy Rodriguez is a world champion, two-time Olympic gold medallist and USA legend. But she is so much more besides.
In 2013, when she was 26 and excelling for club and country, A-Rod revealed that she was pregnant. “I was at the peak of my career – I had endorsements and a spot on the national team. I was worried all that would go away.”
Fast forward a year, though, and she was already back in the USWNT shirt. Another year later, she would be lifting the greatest prize in women’s football – with her son looking on.
“Physically, the journey was so hard,” she said. “But I stayed motivated and dedicated. To win the World Cup with my son there was so special. He could see his mom there being successful, working her heart out, and I wanted to be that kind of role model for my child.
Rodriguez, 32, gave birth to her second child in 2016 and says she feels “more powerful” and plays with “extra fire” since becoming a mother.
As she said: “I think it’s amazing that my two little boys have women role models. To see their mom being successful on a soccer field and see her getting up at 5am to train before the sun comes up, that shows them persistence, dedication and hard work – all of which I want to instil in them.”
