Sources: Brazil to name Diniz as interim coach

Fluminense coach Fernando Diniz has reached an agreement with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) for a one-year interim coaching deal while Brazil wait for Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, sources told ESPN Brasil.

Ancelotti’s contract with the Spanish league giants is up in July of 2024, at which time the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) hopes to sign him to manage Brazil through the 2026 World Cup, CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues said last month.

Sources said they expect the official announcement to come later on Tuesday and Diniz is expected to debut with the team in September.

Brazil, five-time world champions, have been without a coach since the resignation of Tite following their quarterfinal exit at the 2022 World Cup in December.

They are due to play six World Cup qualifying matches between September and November 2023, followed by a break until September 2024. Plans have also been announced for a friendly with Spain in March 2024.

The Copa America is due to take place between June and July 2024, in the United States.

Carlo Ancelotti has coached clubs including Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Madrid in a 28-year managerial career — becoming the only coach to win four Champions Leagues — but has never taken charge of a national team.
