What to Know
The San Jose State Spartans have been on the wrong side of a one-way rivalry with the UNLV Rebels and are hoping to record their first win since Feb. 11 of 2017. The Spartans and UNLV will face off in a Mountain West battle at 9 p.m. ET on Monday at Provident Credit Union Event Center. Given that these two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
SJSU was pulverized by the Colorado State Rams 78-42 this past Saturday. One thing holding SJSU back was the mediocre play of guard Trey Smith, who did not have his best game: he played for 34 minutes but put up just three points on 1-for-12 shooting.
Meanwhile, UNLV was within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap this past Friday as they fell 73-68 to the Fresno State Bulldogs. UNLV’s defeat shouldn’t obscure the performances of guard Bryce Hamilton, who had 24 points, and forward Royce Hamm Jr., who had 14 points along with eight rebounds.
The Spartans are expected to lose this next one by 8. Now might not be the best time to take SJSU against the spread since they’ve let down bettors for the past two consecutive games.
The losses put SJSU at 7-7 and UNLV at 9-7. SJSU and UNLV are both 3-3 after wins this year, but that symmetry won’t hold for long.
