Women’s boxing divisional rankings: A new No. 1 at super middleweight

There’s a new undisputed champion in women’s boxing. Savannah Marshall beat Franchon Crews Dezurn by majority decision on Saturday in Manchester, England to become the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Marshall’s win earns her the No. 1 spot in the division and pushes Crews Dezurn down to No. 3, one spot behind Shadasia Green, who had been the WBC mandatory challenger before Crews-Dezurn decided to face Marshall.

Marshall (13-1, 10 KO) could now face Green, who would be a very, very difficult test for her and is one of the hardest hitters, pound-for-pound, in women’s boxing. Marshall could also have a rematch with Claressa Shields for the super middleweight (or potentially middleweight) titles. Or she could have a rematch with Crews Dezurn (8-2, 2 KO).

All good options. All good fights which should bring in some big purses, too.

On the same card, Natasha Jonas (14-2-1, 9 KO) became a simultaneous two-weight champion when she stopped Kandi Wyatt (11-5, 3 KO) in the eighth round to win the IBF welterweight title. Already No. 1 at junior middleweight, Jonas now becomes No. 2 at welterweight, while Jessica McCaskill, the WBA and WBC champion, remains at No. 1.

It’s the fourth straight fight where Jonas has added a title to her resume and based on potential options at either junior middleweight or welterweight, it’s reasonable to think her fifth fight could be a massive one — at either division.

In Sheffield, Bea Ferreira (3-0, 1 KO) beat Karla Ramos Zamora (10-10-1, 3 KO) on points at junior lightweight. Ferreira, the Olympian from Brazil, is close to cracking the top 5 and is a high-level fighter.

This weekend, ESPN’s No. 1 flyweight, WBC and WBA champion Marlen Esparza, fights for the first time in 2023 in a unification bout against WBO champion, and ESPN’s No. 3 flyweight, Gabriela Celeste Alaniz, in San Antonio, Texas.

Esparza (13-1, 1 KO) last fought in August 2022, beating Eva Guzman by unanimous decision. Alaniz (14-0, 6 KO) has stopped her last three opponents. This should be a high-level fight and potential fight of the year candidate.

On Friday, ESPN’s No. 4 middleweight, Olivia Curry (7-1, 2 KO) is fighting Katharina Lehner (1-1) in Illinois.

Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
