Caroline Dubois took another step forward in her ascendant career last Saturday, moving into the ESPN lightweight rankings after defeating Yanina del Carmen Lescano in a lopsided points decision, 80-71. Dubois, who went the distance for the first time since her professional debut in 2022, knocked Lescano down in the fifth round.
Dubois (7-0, 5 KO), 22, had earned stoppages in her last five fights prior to Lescano (13-3, 4 KO). The win pushes Dubois into the No. 5 spot, replacing Lescano.
In New Orleans on Saturday, Julissa Alejandra Guzman upset Ramla Ali with an eighth-round knockout in a junior featherweight bout. Guzman’s only losses have come to WBC junior featherweight champion Yamileth Mercado, and in her debut in 2015. Guzman (13-2-2, 7 KO) has scored stoppages in her last three fights, and the win over Ali was the best of the 26-year-old’s career. Guzman’s power should make her a dangerous opponent going forward, although Ali cut her early in the fight. It’s the first loss for Ali (8-1, 2 KO), who was knocked down twice in the fight, the first time in her pro career she’s been on the canvas.
On the same card, junior bantamweight prospect Ginny Fuchs (3-0, 1 KO) defeated Indeya Rodriguez (6-8-2, 1 KO) by unanimous decision in an eight-round bout.
In the United Kingdom, Stevi Levy (9-1) beat Svitlana Vasylevska (3-4, 1 KO) in a junior featherweight fight. It was already the fourth fight of 2023 for Vasylevska, who has yet to win consecutive fights in her career. And in Germany, junior middleweight contender Femke Hermans stopped Maria Lindberg after her corner refused to let her go out for the start of the second round after Hermans knocked her down late in the first. It’s the fourth straight win, and second consecutive stoppage, for Hermans (16-4, 7 KO). It’s the third loss in the last four fights for Lindberg (20-9-2, 10 KO), the 46-year-old multi-time world title challenger.
Last Tuesday in Japan, Mizuki Hiruta (5-0, 1 KO) retained her WBO junior bantamweight title by knocking out Casey Morton (11-4-3, 3 KO) in the first round. It was the first title defense for Hiruta, who won the belt last year. Hiruta is still outisde of the top 5 in the division. Despite two straight losses, Lourdes Juarez, keep the No. 5 spot because both of those loses came by close decision to ESPN’s No. 2 junior bantamweight Asley Gonzalez Macias.
This week, former WBO junior flyweight champion Tenkai Tsunami (29-13-1, 17 KO) moves up to junior bantamweight to fight Saowaluk Nareepangsri (16-22, 7 KO) on Wednesday in Japan. On Saturday, ESPN’s No. 3 strawweight, Sarah Bormann (16-0, 7 KO) fights for the second time in as many months, taking on Perla Perez (6-7-1, 1 KO), who despite her record has won her last six fights. Also on Saturday, ESPN’s No. 3 middleweight, Ema Kozin (22-1-1, 12 KO), fights for the first time in a year, taking on Halanna Dos Santos (14-11, 9 KO) in a junior middleweight bout. Dos Santos took a long layoff, but has not won a fight since 2012 and is on a seven-fight losing streak. And at featherweight, top contender Nina Meinke (16-3, 4 KO) takes on Kimika Miyoshi (17-13-2, 6 KO).
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
