With no major women’s fights this past weekend, we focus our attention on a very important matchup this week.
Former champion Kim Clavel (16-1, 3 KO) returns to the ring Friday to try and start a path to regaining her title. ESPN’s No. 3-ranked junior flyweight and the former WBC champion in the division, will try to rebound from the first loss of her career when she takes on Naomi Arellano Reyes (9-2, 5 KO) on Friday night in Laval, Canada. It’s the first fight of 2023 for Reyes, who lost to Gabriela Fundora by unanimous decision last year.
That bout is one of three women fights on the card along with a featherweight bout between Caroline Veyre (3-0) and Emma Gongora (6-2) and a flyweight matchup between 19-year-old Canadian prospect Alexas Kubicki (6-0) and Linda Contreras Ibarra (2-3-2, 2 KO).
On Saturday in Germany, ESPN’s No. 3 strawweight, Sarah Bormann (15-0, 7 KO) is taking on Yadira Bustillos (7-0).
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
