Women’s boxing divisional rankings: Former champion Maiva Hamadouche retires, who takes her spot at 130 pounds?

ESPN’s No. 3 strawweight Sarah Bormann won the interim WBC title by scoring a unanimous decision win against Yadira Bustillos last Saturday and kept her spot in the division. It’s a big win for Bormann (16-0, 7 KO), which should put her in line for a title shot against either Seniesa Estrada (WBA, WBC champion) or Yokasta Valle (IBF, WBO champion). It was the first loss for Bustillos (7-1) in by far the biggest fight of her career.

On Friday, former junior flyweight champion Kim Clavel took another step toward getting a title shot, beating Naomi Arellano Reyes by unanimous decision. Clavel (17-1, 3 KO) remains No. 3 in the division. It’s the second straight loss for Reyes (9-3, 5 KO).

This week is full of title fights in women’s boxing — including the biggest fight of the year to date.

While Katie Taylor-Chantelle Cameron for Cameron’s undisputed junior welterweight championship is the main attraction for the weekend, there are many belts on the line over the next seven days.

The big one is Taylor-Cameron, ESPN’s No. 1 lightweight (Taylor) versus No. 1 junior welterweight (Cameron) in the world facing off against one another. Neither fighter has lost in their career. For Taylor, this is an opportunity to become undisputed in a second weight class.

It’s also a homecoming fight for the Irish star, as she’ll be fighting for the first time as a professional in Dublin. Taylor (22-0, 6 KO) hasn’t fought yet in 2023 and this will be her first fight outside of the lightweight division since 2019. For Cameron (17-0, 8 KO), this will be the first defense of the undisputed titles. Cameron stepped in to face Taylor after Amanda Serrano had to pull out due to injury.

Cameron last fought in November, when she beat Jessica McCaskill to win the undisputed crown.

On the undercard, former pound-for-pound No. 1 Cecilia Braekhus (37-2, 9 KO) will challenge WBA junior middleweight champ Terri Harper (13-1-1, 6 KO), who’s making her first title defense. Harper is ESPN’s No. 2 fighter in the division, Braekhus No. 4.

But the fun starts Wednesday in Paris, with the WBA junior bantamweight title fight between champion Clara Lescurat, ESPN’s No. 4 junior bantamweight, and Daniela De Jesus Aguiar. This is the second title defense for Lescurat (8-0, 3 KO), and the 35-year-old’s European debut. She’s fighting a young fighter in Aguilar (7-1, 5 KO), who is 23 and has never fought outside of her country of Brazil.

On Friday, former lightweight world title challenger Miriam Gutierrez (14-2, 5 KO), who hasn’t fought since losing to Amanda Serrano in 2021, returns to the ring at junior middleweight to face Patricia Martin Cabrera (1-0) in Spain.

There were changes at junior lightweight. No. 2 Maiva Hamadouche has been removed from the rankings due to her retirement last week. That moved every fighter one spot and alloowed for the return of Hyun Mi Choi at No. 5.

Watch for Bea Ferreira in this division, though. It’s been interesting to see this weight class over the last two years go from one of the more contested ones to one with a lot of questions beyond undisputed champion Alycia Baumgardner and the proven Persoon.

Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
