The first unification fight of the women’s boxing calendar is here. WBC junior flyweight champion Kim Clavel, ESPN’s No. 1 fighter in the division, takes on WBA junior flyweight champion Jessica Nery Plata, who is ESPN’s No. 5 at 108 pounds, in Laval, Quebec, Canada on Friday.
It is the first title defense for both fighters. Plata (28-2, 3 KO) won the title in March when she beat Yesica Yolanda Bopp by split decision. Clavel (16-0, 3 KO) won her belt in July when she scored a dominant unanimous decision over Yesenia Gomez. The winner could be in for a massive year in the sport.
It’s one of three women’s fights on a card that also includes ESPN’s No. 4 welterweight, Marie Pier Houle (7-0-1, 2 KO) facing Marisol Moreno (6-3) in an eight-round fight. Moreno has lost her last two fights, both to Cindy Reyes Espinoza last year. Her last win came in 2021. Houle fought three times in 2022, all wins by unanimous decision.
Also on Friday, in Rosario, Argentina, former multi-division world champion Daniela Romina Bermudez (29-4-3, 10 KO) is fighting for the first time since being knocked out by Amanda Serrano in 2021 when she takes on Lilian Dolores Silva (4-15-1) in an eight-round junior lightweight fight. This fight seems like a massive disparity in talent despite Bermudez’s layoff.
On Saturday in Milwaukee, ESPN’s No. 5 junior welterweight, Mary McGee, makes the move up to welterweight in her first fight since she lost to Chantelle Cameron in a junior welterweight title fight in October, 2021. It will be the first fight for McGee (27-4, 15 KO) at welterweight since 2018. Her opponent, Dahianna Santana (40-13, 16 KO), is on a four-fight win streak since she was knocked out by Amanda Serrano in a junior lightweight bout in 2020. However, Santana hasn’t beaten someone with a winning record since 2014.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
