Shadasia Green spent years waiting for this moment and on Saturday, much of her future started to come into view. The super middleweight arguably had the most impressive performance of the whole card at the Hulu Theater in New York, stopping former IBF and WBA super middleweight champion Elin Cederroos in the sixth round.
It was a statement fight for Green (12-0, 11 KO), who has now stopped her last nine opponents and became the WBC mandatory challenger for undisputed super middleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn, who was in attendance.
Green moves up to No. 2 in the division, just behind Crews-Dezurn, and Cederroos remains at No. 4, mostly because she’s still a top fighter in a division that lacks depth.
In the co-main event, the first of two undisputed title fights, Alycia Baumgardner (14-1, 7 KO) defeated Elhem Mekhaled and remained at No. 1 in the 130-pound division. But the performance of Mekhaled (15-2, 3 KO) stood out enough to move her into the rankings even in a loss, jumping in at No. 5 and pushing out former WBA champion Hyun-Mi Choi.
Mekhaled’s only two career losses are to the Nos. 1 and 4 fighters in the division — Baumgardner and Delfine Persoon.
In the main event, Amanda Serrano went back and forth with Erika Cruz for a decision win to become the undisputed featherweight champion. Serrano (44-2-1, 30 KO) clearly won the fight, but an excellent performance by Cruz (15-2, 3 KO) keeps her at No. 2 in the division.
While Serrano is off to fight Katie Taylor in April next, not many would be upset to see a future rematch between Serrano and Cruz because of the high-action, entertaining fight it was.
Also on the card, featherweight Skye Nicolson and junior featherweight Ramla Ali also performed well, particularly Ali, who is on the cusp of the top 5 in her division, which is one of the most crowded in the sport.
In Germany on Saturday, Oshin Derieuw (19-0, 7 KO) continued her dominance by stopping Francia Elena Bravo when she (23-6-2, 13 KO) failed to come out for the eighth round of their fight. At the time of the stoppage, Derieuw was up 70-63 on all three scorecards. Derieuw, 35, remains an intriguing fighter at 140 pounds, and is a potential future opponent for undisputed champion Chantelle Cameron.
Also on Saturday, in Argentina, former three-division world champion Daniela Bermudez fought for the first time in nearly two years as Bermudez (30-4-3, 10 KO) beat an overmatched Lilian Dolores Silva (4-16-1) in a junior lightweight bout. Silva last won a fight in 2017. This was the debut for Bermudez at the weight class, and if she wants to contend there, it’s not inconceivable she’d end up in the ESPN top 5 by the end of the year.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
