Women’s boxing divisional rankings: Taylor lost to Cameron, but she still made the 140-pound division top 5

Chantelle Cameron’s ascent to being one of the best fighters in the world — and almost certainly a move up the pound-for-pound ratings the next time they are published — continued on Saturday with another outstanding performance.

Her majority decision win over Katie Taylor to keep her undisputed junior welterweight championship kept her locked in at No. 1 at 140 pounds. However, there was a shake-up in the top 5 behind her.

Taylor (22-1, 6 KO) suffered her first career loss but re-entered the junior welterweight rankings at No. 2 while keeping the No. 1 spot at lightweight. This may be a temporary spot for Taylor, depending on what weight class she plans on fighting next.

This decision bumped Jessica McCaskill down to No. 3, and Kali Reis, who last fought in November 2021 when she became the WBA and WBO junior welterweight champion, was removed from the rankings due to inactivity while she continues with a successful career as an actress.

Who Cameron fights next becomes an interesting question. If it is not Taylor at junior welterweight, WBO welterweight champion Sandy Ryan or even Mikaela Mayer, who just moved up to lightweight to win the WBC interim title, would make sense.

At junior bantamweight, WBA champion Clara Lescurat (9-0, 4 KO) made the second defense of her title, stopping Daniela De Jesus Aguiar in the eighth round. Lescurat remains at No. 4 in the division — and perhaps a fight against fellow Argentinian, Micaela Lujan, could come next.

This Friday, former featherweight champion Sarah Mahfoud takes her second fight of the year — this time against Veronica Tosi (4-1, 2 KO) in Copenhagen. Mahfoud (12-1, 3 KO), ESPN’s No. 3 featherweight, is continuing her way back after losing the IBF title to Amanda Serrano last year.

Saturday brings more title fights, including a rarity. The vacant IBF heavyweight title will be on the line between Lani Daniels and Alrie Meleisea in New Zealand. It’s a matchup between ESPN’s No. 1 fighter at 175-plus pounds, Daniels (7-2-2) and the No. 2 fighter in the division, Meleisea (6-1-1).

In the United Kingdom, WBA junior middleweight champion Terri Harper will make her first title defense a week later than anticipated after Cecilia Braekhus had to withdraw from their scheduled fight on May 20th due to illness. Harper (13-1-1, 6 KO), ESPN’s No. 2 junior middleweight, is fighting Ivana Habazin.

On Sunday, two of the best junior lightweights will fight as No. 2 Delfine Persoon (47-3, 19 KO) takes on No. 4 Bo Mi Re Shin (15-1-3, 8 KO) in Belgium. The winner could be the next opponent for undisputed champion Alycia Baumgardner should she beat Christina Linardatou in July.

In Sweden, also on Saturday, Linn Sandstrom (7-2-1, 2 KO), who has been making a push at junior bantamweight, fights Johana Zuniga (16-5, 9 KO), a former world title challenger who has lost her last five fights. And featherweight prospect Karriss Artingstall (3-0) has her second fight in two months when she takes on Jade Taylor (5-0) in Cheshire, United Kingdom.

Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
