It’s a busy weekend in women’s boxing. Undisputed super middleweight champion Franchon Crews Dezurn (8-1, 2 KO) takes on former WBO middleweight champion Savannah Marshall (12-1, 10 KO) Saturday night in in Manchester, England.
Crews Dezurn is ESPN’s No. 1 super middleweight and Marshall is ranked at No. 2 at middleweight.
It’s Crews Dezurn’s toughest fight since her debut — a four-round loss to pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter Claressa Shields — her only pro loss. Shields also gave Marshall her only professional loss in October last year to earn the undisputed middleweight championship.
The winner should end up facing ESPN’s No. 2 super middleweight, Shadasia Green, who had been the mandatory challenger for Crews Dezurn before the Marshall fight was finalized.
On the same card, ESPN’s No. 1 junior middleweight, Natasha Jonas, is dropping down to welterweight to take on Kandi Wyatt for the IBF welterweight belt. This is the fourth division Jonas (13-2-1, 8 KO) is attempting to win a belt in. She drew against Terri Harper for the junior lightweight titles in 2020, lost to Katie Taylor for Taylor’s undisputed lightweight title in 2021 and then won three of the four junior middleweight titles in 2022 — Harper, who also moved up from junior lightweight, has the other.
Wyatt (11-4, 3 KO) has been in three title fights before, losing to Jessica McCaskill while challenging for her undisputed welterweight titles in 2021, and being defeated by Kali Reis in 2020 and Christina Linardatou in 2019 for vacant junior welterweight titles.
Elsewhere this weekend, Jeyssa Marcel (9-0, 1 KO) fights Carla Camila Campos Gonzalez (5-1, 4 KO) in a bantamweight fight in France on Wednesday.
On Saturday in Buenos Aires, Maira Moneo (12-1, 2 KO), a contender at lightweight from Uruguay, takes on Alys Sanchez (17-8-1, 6 KO).
Last Saturday, Sarah Bormann, ESPN’s No. 3 strawweight, picked up a unanimous decision win over Perla Perez in Germany. It might be time for Bormann (17-0, 7 KO) to leave Germany, where she’s fought all but one of her pro bouts, for a tougher challenge in the United Kingdom or United States.
She’d be a good fight for Seniesa Estrada or Yokasta Valle until the two of them inevitably fight one another.
ESPN’s No. 3 middleweight, Ema Kozin beat Timea Belik in a junior middleweight bout, the second straight fight for Kozin (23-1-1, 12 KO) at junior middleweight. Belik (7-9, 3 KO) has lost four of her last five fights. Since Kozin has not fought at middleweight in over a year, she’s been removed from the middleweight rankings.
This moves Raquel Miller up to No. 3 and Olivia Curry up to No. 4 while inserting Mapule Ngubane at No. 5. Middleweight is a division bereft of depth at the moment behind undisputed champion Claressa Shields.
Kozin, for now, is unranked at junior middleweight but she could end up being a top 5 contender there soon.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
