Amanda Serrano did precisely what was expected Saturday in England. She returned to her dominant form, dispatched another featherweight opponent and picked up the IBF championship in the process.
By beating Sarah Mahfoud, Serrano now has all but the WBA belt, which she could potentially nab in a future fight with Erika Cruz. Serrano (43-2-1, 30 KO) rebounded from her first loss in a decade to defend her WBC and WBO belts at 126 pounds for the first time in over a year.
She remained at No. 1 in ESPN’s featherweight rankings while Mahfoud (11-1, 3 KO) dipped to No. 4, flipping with Yamileth Mercado — who Serrano beat last August. If Serrano wants to fight next at featherweight, Cruz makes all the sense for the 33-year-old from Brooklyn, New York.
In a featherweight fight on the same card, Raven Chapman (4-0, 2 KO) beat Jorgelina Guanini (10-5-2, 1 KO) — Guanini’s fourth loss in her last five fights. Chapman could be a future Serrano opponent, although it’s probably too early in Chapman’s career for that.
The WBA junior middleweight title did change owners Saturday as Terri Harper (13-1-1, 6 KO) — moving up three weight classes — won a unanimous decision over Hannah Rankin (12-6, 3 KO). It was Harper’s second fight since she lost her WBC junior lightweight title to Alycia Baumgardner, and Harper looked very comfortable in the higher division.
The win pushed Harper into the 154-pound rankings at No. 3 and shifted the rest of the division underneath her. A fight with Natasha Jonas — ESPN’s No. 2 fighter in the division and the WBC and WBO titleholder — makes all the sense to be next.
While Gabriela Celeste Alaniz’s opponent wasn’t that impressive, Alaniz finished her with a stoppage — knocking her down in the seventh and then having her corner stop the fight in the ninth — was. It was the fifth stoppage in the past seven fights for Alaniz (14-0, 6 KO) in a win over Debora Rengifo (18-10-1, 10 KO) in the first defense of her WBO flyweight title.
The win moved her up to No. 4 in ESPN’s flyweight rankings and a fight with fellow Argentinian Leonela Paola Yudica in a unification bout could be next.
ESPN’s No. 5 strawweight, Sarah Bormann (15-0, 7 KO), won her bout against Mexico’s Elizabeth Lopez Corso (10-5-5, 1 KO) by unanimous decision.
This weekend, ESPN’s No. 1 junior bantamweight, Lourdez Juarez (34-2, 4 KO), will fight for the second time this year when she takes on Asley Gonzalez Macias (14-2, 7 KO) in a WBC title bout. Macias’ victories have largely come against fighters with under-.500 records, although she did knock out then-undefeated Naylea Gil Sanabia in 2019. Sanabia has since lost three of her last four fights.
Also on Saturday, ESPN’s top-rated junior featherweight, Jackie Nava (39-4-4, 16 KO), is scheduled to fight Gloria Elena Yancaqueo (10-11-3, 3 KO) in a fight that feels like a mismatch. Kudakwashe Chiwandire (5-2-1, 4 KO) will defend her interim WBC junior featherweight title against Zulina Munoz (53-4-2, 30 KO).
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
