In a title fight that arguably shouldn’t have been a title fight due to the WBO’s decision to strip Segolene Lefebvre of her title due to injuries, Debora Anahi Dionicius beat Marcela Eliana Acuna by unanimous decision on Dec. 23 to win the WBO’s junior featherweight belt. When healthy, Lefebvre will become the mandatory challenger to the title
The 34-year-old Dionicius (35-4, 6 KO) won by a 97-93, 97-93, 96-94 margin over the 46-year-old Acuna (51-9-2, 20 KO). It’s the second time the two have fought for belts — Dionicius also beat Acuna for the WBO’s interim featherweight title last year.
It’s the third weight division in which Dionicus has held an interim or full world title, joining featherweight and junior bantamweight, where she was the IBF champion for four years and made 12 defenses.
Dionicius doesn’t crack our rankings, though, in part because unlike the WBO standards, Lefebvre still qualifies because she fought earlier this year.
An upset occurred in New York on Wednesday at junior bantamweight, where Sulem Urbina lost a unanimous decision to Indeya Smith. The 26-year-old Smith (6-6-2, 1 KO) had the biggest win of her career in her seventh fight of 2022. Urbina (13-3-1, 2 KO) has been 2-3-1 since the start of 2020, including losses to Smith, Marlen Esparza and Naoko Fujioka in a WBA flyweight title fight.
On Friday, Dec. 30 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, former WBC lightweight and junior welterweight champion Erica Farias (27-6, 10 KO) is fighting in a 10-round lightweight bout against Maira Moneo (11-1, 2 KO). The 38-year-old Farias has lost four of her last five fights dating back to 2018, but those losses were twice to Jessica McCaskill, to Mayer and to Sandy Ryan in August in a rematch after she beat Ryan in March.
Friday will be the first time Farias will fight in her home country since 2018.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
