Yuko Kuroki made the first successful defense of her world WBO atomweight title on Thursday, March 30, when she beat Nanae Suzuki by unanimous decision, 97-93, 96-94, 96-94 in Japan.
It was a big win for Kuroki (21-7-2, 9 KO), who had been the WBC strawweight champion from 2014 to 2017. It’s also her second straight win over Suzuki, the former WBO atomweight beltholder. The win moved Kuroki into No. 4 in the division. Also on Thursday, in Canada, junior bantamweight prospect Taylah Robertson (8-1, 2 KO) defeated Jaqueline Mucio Munoz (7-12-2) by unanimous decision.
Friday in Bermuda, bantamweight Jamie Mitchell rebounded in her first fight since losing the WBA title with a majority decision win over Lindsay Garbatt (9-10-2, 3 KO). Mitchell (9-1-2, 5 KO) won 97-93 on two scorecards while a third judge had it at 95-95. On the same card, Oshae Jones (3-0) won her second fight in a month at welterweight, beating Simone da Silva (17-23, 6 KO) by majority decision, 60-53, 59-55, 57-57. It was the 10th straight loss for da Silva, who hasn’t won a fight since 2019 for the multi-time world title challenger.
In other action last Saturday, Rebecca Hawker (7-0, 3 KO) knocked out Carisse Brown (7-4, 4 KO) in a seventh round of a featherweight fight — the third straight loss for Brown. Hawker is getting closer to a top 5 spot.
Looking ahead, Gabriela Fundora (10-0, 4 KO), ESPN’s No. 5 flyweight, will fight on the undercard of her brother Sebastian’s headlining fight against Brian Mendoza in California. Gabriela will take on Maria Micheo Santizo (11-2, 6 KO) in Santizo’s first fight in the division. Santizo’s only losses have come to Seniesa Estrada, at strawweight, and Anabel Ortiz at junior flyweight.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
