Former junior lightweight unified champion Mikaela Mayer may have entered a new division against a last-minute opponent, but on Saturday she showed without question she’d be able to handle a heavier weight class.
Mayer (18-1, 5 KO) was dominant in a unanimous decision win over Lucy Wildheart (10-2, 4 KO), who filled in on 24 hours notice after Mayer’s initial opponent, former WBO junior welterweight champion Christina Linardatou, couldn’t fight. It was a good showing for Wildheart, one of ESPN’s fighters to watch entering 2022, on the biggest stage of her career, but a better spot for Mayer, who showed she can be one of the best in another tough division.
By changing divisions, Mayer is now ranked at lightweight, where she takes the No. 3 spot in ESPN’s divisional rankings behind Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano.
At 130 pounds, everybody moves up one spot and Bo Mi Re Shin enters at No. 5. There could be more changes coming there as Maiva Hamadouche hasn’t fought in 17 months — close to the window of inactivity to remove her from the rankings.
Also on Saturday, Fabiana Bytyqi, ESPN’s No. 3 atomweight, defended her WBC title in a rematch against Elizabeth Lopez Corzo in the Czech Republic. Bytyqi (20-0-2, 5 KO) had a split draw against Lopez Corzo (10-6-5, 1 KO) last year. In Osaka, Japan, atomweight Sumire Yamanaka (7-0, 3 KO) picked up her third stoppage in a row beating Pimchanok Thepjanda (4-2, 2 KO). At junior featherweight, Tysie Gallagher (6-1) beat Lisa Whiteside (5-1, 1 KO) in the United Kingdom.
This weekend, the vacant WBO welterweight title is on the line when ESPN’s No. 4 welterweight, Marie Pier Houle (8-0-1, 2 KO), of Canada, faces ESPN’s No. 5 junior welterweight, Sandy Ryan (5-1, 2 KO) in Cardiff, England. It’s Houle’s first fight outside North America. It’ll be Ryan’s first fight at the weight since March, 2022 after fighting her last two bouts at junior welterweight. Emerging featherweight Skye Nicolson (6-0) is also on the card, taking on Linda Laura Lecca (15-6-2, 3 KO). Lecca has lost her last two fights.
In Argentina, Daniela Bermudez (30-4-3, 10 KO) takes on Daniela Barbara Rivero (9-4, 1 KO) at junior featherweight.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
